Loneliness is a health risk

Feeling lonely? You’re not alone. Experts warn that chronic loneliness, which affects 2.4 million people in the UK according to the Office for National Statistics, is a health epidemic. Solitary living is said to increase the risk of fatal conditions such as heart disease, dementia, type 2 diabetes and depression. An ONS report in 2016 found that 5 per cent of adults in England “often” or “always” felt lonely. And younger adults, aged 16 to 24, felt lonely more often than those in older age groups, with women feeling that they lacked social contact more than men. The Royal College of General Practitioners says lonely Britons are 50 per cent more likely to die prematurely than people with a good social network. (Source The i Paper)
