Many parent carers caring for a child/young person with additional needs are juggling lots of things at once and dealing with complex issues. Getting appropriate support and information for your child becomes your priority and in many cases your own wants and needs get lost and forgotten about – as individuals, couples and families.

Local support services who can support you in your role as a parent carer:

Parent carers of children under 18 can access a combined child, parent and family assessment via JIGSAW, Southampton City Council’s integrated health and social care provision. They support children and young people and their families who have a Southampton address with a significant level of need. Jigsaw's phone no is: 023 8091 5702. The referral criteria is here: Please read below for further clarification.

If a child has disabilities and parents are requesting a statutory assessment it will be completed.  This would include a parent carer needs assessment and consideration of respite.  In Southampton, Jigsaw’s criteria are fully published on the Local Offer (SCC website), and, if a child or young person does not meet these criteria then their assessment (following referral) will be carried out within mainstream services (e.g. via MASH and Assessment Team). (Jigsaw is a targeted specialist service for children and young people with moderate, severe or Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities. )

Please regularly check here:
In the meantime, if you have any questions or queries, please contact your child’s Social Worker, nurse or Occupational Therapist. If you have any helpful suggestions, or discover any resources that you think other families would benefit from, please email them to [email protected]

Southampton Parent Carer Forum

This is a friendly group of parent carers who have children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities aged 0-25 years.  They support and train parent carers to enable them to have input and be involved with shaping services alongside the professionals who provide health, education, adult and social services. Their shared mission is to improve and enhance the experiences and opportunities of children and young people with additional needs by enabling parents and carers to be heard and be at the heart of decisions about development and delivery of services in Southampton.  The forum will represent the views of the collective community and not an individual voice.  The role of the forum is not to advocate for individual families and will signpost to specialist services.
