Solent NHS Trust provide a dental service for all ages who may require a more specialised approach to their care and are unable to receive this in a General Dental Practice.

This provides oral health care and dental treatment for children and adults who have an impairment, disability and/or complex medical condition. This includes those with:

Learning disabilities   Severe physical problems
Challenging behaviour   Frail/elderly or housebound
Severe physical disabilities   Children living in care
Autistic Spectrum Disorders   Severe mental health problems or conditions including dementia
Medical special needs   Severe or debilitating dental phobia
Special dental conditions   Patients who have undergone head and neck radiotherapy
Extensive decay Brain injuries
Weight of more than 21 stones Child protection issues/looked after children

Referrals not accepted for: Nervous/apprehensive adults, children requiring orthodontic extractions, adults requesting a general anaesthetic.

Services are provided at the following dental clinic locations:-

Southampton: Bitterne, Millbrook, Royal South Hants Hospital

Patients requiring a general anaesthetic following assessment will be treated at hospital locations including Southampton General Hospital.  For those who are housebound or frail elderly people, a domiciliary service can be provided.

To be seen within this service the patient must be registered with a Hampshire General Medical Practitioner (GP)

Referrals are accepted from

  • Dental Practitioners
  • General Medical Practitioners
  • Any other Health or Social Care Professional
  • Voluntary organisations and community groups
  • Education/special schools
  • Families, carers, self referral where appropriate

The referrals are screened by the administration team.  However all clinical decisions will be made at the time of the initial assessment, by the dentist, as to whether the referred patient is suitable for the service.

You can download a 'Dental Passport' here.  The Dental Passport enables patients with learning disabilities to share information with the dental team such as their health and health difficulties, likes and dislikes, and any medication that they may be on.
